THE SLIPPAGE OF THE FEMORAL EPIPHYSIS

Ligaments are structures of soft tissues that connect bones to each other.
The ulnar ligament is a structure that works to maintain a normal relation between the ulna (one of the 2 bones of the forearm) and the humerus (arm bone).
This ligament is frequently aggrieved by repetitive movements, especially in throwing sports (tennis, hockey, polo etc.), in gymnastics or after elbow dislocation.
In most cases, the rupture of the ulnar collateral ligament is a severe sports injury, rarely the ligament being injured from normal daily activities.

At the elbow level, two of the most important ligaments are the ulnar collateral ligament (also called medial) and the lateral collateral ligament.
The ulnar collateral ligament is located on the medial side of the elbow and the lateral collateral ligament is on the outside. Together, these two ligaments, collateral ulna and lateral collateral, connect the humerus (arm bone) to the ulna (forearm bone).
These ligaments are the main source of stability for the elbow joint.
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can help relieve pain and inflammation, but are recommended in the short term, 7-14 days maximum.
Ice applied topically, in sessions of 5-10 minutes, 3-5 times a day, significantly helps relieve pain and inflammation. Always put a thin towel between the ice and the area on which it is applied so as not to irritate the skin.
Activities that cause or aggravate the pain will be interrupted.
The return to sports activities is done gradually, a few weeks after the injury, on the recommendation of the doctor or physical therapist.
In the first 24-72 hours after the injury it is necessary to wear an orthosis to protect the injured area but also to avoid other injuries.
Orthosis may be necessary, for a short period of time, also when returning to sports activities, in order to add additional support and protection to the elbow until its resistance increases.
Exercise programs are important for regaining strength and muscle strength as well as for restoring the throwing technique (in the case of throwing sports). The lack of recovery program through physical therapy could lead to elbow instability increasing the likelihood of relapse or the appearance of other injuries.
