FRACTURE OF THE THUMB

Written by: Motric Recovery

The hands are the two extremities, provided with fingers, of the upper limbs, and represent the main organ of manipulation.

Fingertips are one of the areas with the most nerve endings in the body and is the main source of tactile information (based on touch).

The thumb has two bones called phalanges. The most common fracture associated with the thumb is actually the fracture of the large bone of the hand, known as the first metacarpal. This bone connects to the bones of the thumb (the most used joint of the hand is the trapeziometacarpal joint of the thumb).

fracture of the thumb

A broken finger is usually caused by direct stress. Common causes may include a fall on an outstretched hand or an attempt to catch a ball.

Calcium deficiency increases the risk of fracture of the finger.

Also, sports activities such as football, basketball, volleyball, wrestling, hockey, skiing can predispose to fracture of the thumb. Wearing appropriate protective equipment, such as gloves, can help prevent fracture of the thumb in many sports.

HOW DOES THE FRACTURE OF THE THUMB MANIFEST?

The most common symptoms that occur in the case of fracture of the thumb are:

➢ severe pain

➢ limited movement or even the inability to move the thumb

➢ deformed appearance

➢ numbness

Many of these symptoms can also occur in a severe sprain or rupture of a ligament around the thumb, which is why an X-ray to establish the diagnosis is necessary.

HOW DO WE TREAT FRACTURE OF THE THUMB?

A broken finger is a serious injury that requires immediate medical attention. With proper treatments, the finger can be recovered and used completely.

1. NON-SURGICAL TREATMENT OR CLOSED REDUCTION

If the ruptured bone fragments have not moved too far from the fracture site, they can be repositioned back, without the need for surgery. The process of repositioning the fractured bones can be painful, which is why it is done under anesthesia. After repositioning, immobilize the thumb with the help of a plastered splint or orthotic.

2. SURGERY

It is necessary when there is a severe displacement of the bone fragments (open reduction). When there is only one broken fragment at the base of the bone, the fracture is called Bennett fracture and in terms of surgery, the surgeon inserts screws or wires through the skin to hold the broken fragment in the correct position while the bone heals. In the fracture called Rolando, there are several cracks at the level of the bone at the base of the thumb. During surgery, a specialist will insert a small plaque and screws to hold the bone fragments together while the bone heals. This intervention is called open reduction with internal fixation

3. PHYSICAL THERAPY

It is essential to prevent post-immobilization stiffness and also to regain the entire range of motion of the thumb.
