THE MOST IMPORTANT TIPS AFTER A MENISCUS RUPTURE

Written by: Motric Recovery

The meniscus rupture is one of the most common knee injuries . Any action or activity that involves twisting or rotating the knee, especially when it supports body weight, can lead to rupture of the meniscus. Other actions that can result in meniscus rupture are sudden stopping with aggressive pivoting, kneeling for lifting a heavy object, deep squatting (squat position all the way down). Most of the time the meniscus breaks on the sports field, either the lateral or the medial meniscus, rarely both at once.

The meniscuses, lateral (external) and medial (internal), act as pillows absorbing shocks, thus protecting the underlying articular cartilage.

Once recovered, some recommendations should be followed to prevent relapses and/or other injuries.

1. The resumption of activities is done gradually, with a slight increase in their intensity.
Initially, exercises/activities that do not load the knee (they do not involve supporting the body weight) will be performed gradually going to activities that involve greater load. Consult a therapist at all times to guide you in resuming daily and/or sports activities.

2. Participation in recreational sports is done wearing adequate protective equipment, namely the orthosis, which will reduce the instability of the knee joint and especially the laxity of the cruciate and collateral ligaments. Also, the orthosis will prevent the appearance of other injuries to the knee joint.

3. Pay attention to sports such as football, basketball or tennis that most frequently predispose to the rupture of the meniscus or to the relapse, in case of a previous rupture.

4. Personalized shoes pads help to equally distribute the forces around the knee, if a problem of biomechanics of the foot is found. When we think about the biomechanics of the foot, we think about its shape and size but also about its rolling on the ground, which can undergo changes throughout life, along with our social evolution (we no longer go barefoot for example, walking barefoot having a series of beneficial effects on the entire body, from a correct posture to an increased immunity).
A simple example is the flat feet condition, which, untreated, can cause chronic pain in the leg but also inflammation of the tendons (tendonitis). The problems related to the biomechanics of the foot, do not remain localized only at the level of the foot, but involve the entire kinematic chain of the lower limb, involve problems of the knee, pelvis and implicitly of the spine.

5. Avoid deep squatting

A correct deep squat involves a very good mobility and stability of the joints involved, otherwise it puts excessive pressure on the knees causing the appearance of injuries.

6. Manage intense activities correctly. For example, instead of carrying a large weight at once, divide the weight in two, carrying them one at a time.
