CONTRACTURE OF THE TRICEPS BRACHIAL MUSCLE

Written by: Motric Recovery

The triceps brachial muscle is a long and voluminous muscle, located on the posterior side of the arm, stretching from the shoulder blade to the elbow. Its upper extremity is divided into three branches or heads of origin (hence the name triceps): the long head (the long portion of the triceps), the lateral head (the lateral vast) and the medial head (the medial vast). Simple extension (stretching) of the forearm highlights the triceps brachial muscle.

The main function of the muscle is to extend the forearm and straighten the elbow, but it also contributes to the extension of the shoulder back and to the stabilization of the shoulder joint.

Contractures of the triceps muscle are relatively common injuries in athletes, especially when working with heavy weights. Sudden trauma and muscle stretching followed by the immediate appearance of pain is often a sign of contracture.

HOW DO WE TREAT THE CONTRACTURE OF THE TRICEPS MUSCLE?
1. CRYOTHERAPY

Ice applied topically, in sessions of 5-10 minutes, 3-5 times a day, significantly helps reduce pain and swelling. Always put a towel between the ice and the area on which it is applied so as not to irritate the skin.

2. REST

Avoid activities that aggravate the pain and give the muscle time to heal.

3. PHYSICAL THERAPY

Physiotherapy and manual therapy significantly accelerate the healing process and also prevent the appearance of relapses or other injuries.

4. PHYSICAL THERAPY

Once the pain subsides, the physical therapy program that includes will begin:

➢ exercises to stretch the triceps muscle, useful for regaining movement and flexibility
➢ toning exercises (extension exercises)
In everyday activities, gentle movements will be performed to prevent pain and stiffness, but insist on as much movement as possible to adjust the recovery process.

ADVICE:

➢ Any activity that causes pain in the muscle or joint will be interrupted for a period of several days
➢ Compression bandages are quite beneficial to help reduce swelling and inflammation in the affected area
➢ Sudden stretching of the muscles will be avoided to prevent unnecessary injuries
➢ If you lift weights, make sure you do it correctly to prevent overloading of muscles, this also applies to practicing other sports.
